School Closure – Friday 9th January 2026
Thank you for your patience during what’s been a disrupted first week back. We’ve been in touch with Shropshire Council and the Met Office regarding Storm Goretti, which is forecast to bring heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions across Shropshire from Thursday evening into Friday morning (8th & 9th January).
The Met Office has issued:
- Amber Warning for snow: 8pm Thursday to 9am Friday
- Yellow Warning: 5pm Thursday to 12 noon Friday
These warnings mean we’re likely to see:
- Significant travel disruption and hazardous roads
- Possible power cuts and reduced mobile coverage
- Some rural areas becoming inaccessible
Shropshire Council’s Passenger Transport team and all of our private coach services have all confirmed that school transport will not run on Friday due to safety concerns.
With this in mind, and to keep everyone safe, Longlands Primary School will be closed to all children on Friday 9th January.
We’ve made this decision early so families have time to plan. While we always aim to stay open, the advice from the local authority and the Met Office makes it clear that closing is the safest option. Even if conditions seem less severe in Market Drayton and our surrounding areas, transport issues and staffing challenges mean it’s the right call for our community.
Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday.
