Speaking & Listening at Longlands Primary School
Intent
At Longlands, we recognise that having confidence and competence in language is a key life skill and that developing these skills is likely to have the greatest impact on improving children’s life chances. It is our intent that these skills will be further developed and applied across the whole curriculum. Through our Confident Communicator agenda, we strive to develop effective speakers and listeners by actively teaching the children the qualities of good listening and speaking so that they can:
- Actively listen to their peers and adults and formulate appropriate responses
- Understand the rules of turn taking within exchanges
- Have the confidence to speak audibly and fluently in front of audiences
- Maintain appropriate speed, intonation and structure when presenting information orally
- Use the correct register and form of Standard English, appropriate to the situation, when speaking
- Build a rich vocabulary that they can both understand and use effectively.
Implementation
Each class has developed a Discussion Charter to really help the children hone their skills of speaking and listening when discussing in pairs, groups and as a whole class.
Speaking and listening skills are continually taught, revisited and developed through the school day, through subject specific vocabulary and vocabulary lessons, use of talking frames and stem sentences, modelling and frequent opportunities to present in class, at Trust events and in assemblies.
