Welcome to Reception
Reception is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage and an important bridge between Nursery and Key Stage 1. Mrs Gallimore-Johnson and the Early Years team provide a rich, ambitious curriculum that builds on what children already know and can do.
Children learn through a carefully planned balance of direct teaching, guided practice, purposeful play and continuous provision. Communication and language continue to underpin the curriculum, while systematic phonics, early writing and mathematics become increasingly explicit.
Learning in Reception
- Daily Read Write Inc. Phonics.
- Daily reading, storytelling, rhyme and vocabulary development.
- Pathways to Write, enriched through oral rehearsal, role play, drawing and purposeful writing.
- Number Sense Maths and practical mathematical reasoning.
- Healthy Movers, physical development and outdoor learning.
- Brilliant Brushes toothbrushing after lunch.
- Forest School/Wild Woods, farm and allotment experiences.
- Learning across all seven areas of the EYFS.
Preparing for Year 1
During Reception, children become increasingly independent, sustain attention for longer, apply their phonics when reading and writing, deepen their understanding of number, and learn to explain their ideas. Transition into Year 1 is carefully planned so that children experience continuity, appropriate challenge and a confident start to the National Curriculum.
