Journey through 2026-2027

AUTUMN

Establish and revisit
  • Secure sentence boundaries, handwriting and high-frequency spelling.
  • Plan ideas and vocabulary sentence by sentence.
  • Write linked sentences about familiar events or texts.

SPRING

Develop and connect
  • Use coordination and subordination to connect ideas.
  • Use expanded noun phrases and different sentence forms.
  • Reread and revise with a teacher or partner.

SUMMER

Apply and become independent
  • Sustain a purposeful piece with ideas in a logical order.
  • Use tense and punctuation consistently across the piece.
  • Proofread and make increasingly independent corrections.

What families may notice

Across the year, writing should become more accurate, sustained and independent. Children should increasingly be able to explain what they are learning, talk through ideas before writing, use taught knowledge in new contexts and improve their work after rereading.

How families can help

Talk through the order of ideas before writing and ask your child to find one sentence to improve and one spelling or punctuation point to check.
