Year 6 – Oak Class

Welcome to Oak Class!

Oak Class is our fantastic Year 6 Class, taught by Mrs Collins, and supported by Mr Thomas, Mrs Chevins, Mrs Mazan and Mrs Talbot.

In our class, we learn with enthusiasm and work together to create amazing outcomes!

We started the year with many of us visiting Arthog Outdoor Education Centre, for our 4-night residential. It was a fantastic experience for everyone, where we developed team-building skills and tested our resilience and bravery doing many adventurous activities such as canoeing, rock climbing and surfing!

Now we are back in the classroom, we are working hard in our curriculum lessons.

In English we will explore a variety of genres: biographies, information texts and persuasive letters to name a few. Many of our reading lessons will be linked to our class novels: ‘When the Sky Falls’, ‘Holes’ and ‘Malamander’ and we will use these amazing stories as a stimulus for writing too!

In Maths, we are deepening our understanding of number and place value, which will lead us into developing effective and efficient calculation strategies. We play games and complete challenges every week, to ensure that our times table are ‘up to scratch’ and that we are quick with mental strategies. As the year progresses, we will explore fractions decimals and percentages, study different charts and graphs, as well as spending time getting to grips with algebra.

We have so many interesting topics to study across the curriculum, from ‘The Amazon’ in geography lessons, to ‘Evolution’ in science. In RE we learn about what matters most to different religions, and in art we express ourselves with a range of media including graffiti, watercolour and by printing. In history we learn about the Ancient Maya as well as investigating the impact of the World Wars in a more localised study. In D&T we build playground structures and in music we compose rhythms and themes based on everything we have learned throughout our time at primary school. It really is a year filled with great learning opportunities and experiences.

PE takes place on a Monday and Wednesday during the summer term, with activities including football and cricket!

Here’s the standard of reading that we aim for in Year 6.  Click here to learn more about  Phonics & Reading at Longlands.

At the end of this academic year, we will be completing the End of Key Stage 2 Statutory Assessments, so we will gradually begin to practise some test questions in creative and fun ways. Reading at home is the BEST preparation for these tests, so it’s important that we share and read books at home to improve our stamina and comprehension.

Thanks for reading about us! If you ever want to come and visit, please do! We’re a friendly bunch!
